The Ikea Closet

So I told you in my last post that we made a trip to Ikea on our way home from L.A. Now let me tell you, this was not just a random trip. It was well planned out. For over a week in advance, I knew exactly what I *had* to get when we walked into that amazing superstore. The list started with these drapes-

Which I originally saw in THIS blog post over at my friend Stephanie's blog, Froggy and the Mouse. As soon as I saw them I just *knew* I needed them for my boys.

Also courtesy of Stephanie's blog, I had to get this fabric-
I dont have a clue what I am going to do with it yet. But I needed to have it. Cause it matched the drapes. And Stephanie made it look so cute. Unlike Stephanie, I don't sew. Seriously. I can't even sew a button. I am, however, lucky enough to have 2 very loving and generous women in my life who will gladly help me with any sewing project that I have yet to dream up.

I also had this dresser on my list of Ikea needs-
I wanted this dresser to put in the boys closet. Since hubby built their bunk beds, its been kind of hit and miss on clothes storage for the 2 of them. Right after the beds were built, we sold the crib set- which included Pea's dresser. So his clothes sat on the changing table for a while. Then hubby constructed the beginnings of a built in closet system. It worked O.K. for the little one's clothes, but we were unsure how it would work out for Monk's clothes once it was complete. So we decided to add this dresser to the mix. 2 drawers for each of them was really helpful in the whole scheme.

Once we were meandering around the store, my previously hesitant husband (he wasn't an Ikea fan) was loving it! When we came across the Expedit shelving systems he got pretty excited. We ended up buying this one-

He concocted some idea in his head for the closet in the 3 seconds we were standing in front of this shelf. I wasn't super clear on how or IF it would work, but he was convinced, so I just went with it. I need to add here that I was surprised at how big the Expedit squares are. I thought they were very similar to the closetmaid units that you can get at Target. But the Ikea ones are at least 2 inches bigger in each direction, which is huge when you're looking at storage space.

We got home from Ikea/L.A. late Friday night, and on Saturday morning hubby was up and working on the closet. He tore out the previous shelving that was started, as well as the top shelf that went all the way across. A couple hours later he called me in to see what he had done. Ta-Da!

And then he went running off to Ross to look for baskets. He came back with these to put across the top to hold all the misc. junk that seems to get piled up there. Games, puzzles, etc, etc. They fit perfectly, and make things look much neater.

I love how this worked out! In the picture, you can see the difference in the Expedit sized cubes and the Closetmaid ones. The red buckets on the bottom are Closetmaid. The white ones on top are actually Itso (from Target) but are the same size as the ones Ikea used to make for the Expedit shelves. (They no longer carry the cloth bins.). My plan is to get 2 more of the Itso ones to fit in there properly and make use of the extra space, but my Target is totally out. The 2 white ones were the last ones they had. I'm REALLY hoping its because they are just waiting to get more while they remodel, and not because they aren't carrying them any more.

So there you have it- the Ikea closet! Next on the agenda is to paint their room and finally get around to doing the play room (which was the baby's room before the bunk beds).
