Sweet Peas

About a week and a half ago, Monk's class had a little Farm Festival to wrap up the farm unit they just completed in class. The parents all brought "farm food" (apples, strawberries, corn, and various other foods that are grown locally or were made from those foods) to the park for everyone to snack on, and there were a couple games set up.

One of the parents brought a cool activity for the kids to do as well. She brought egg shells that were mostly whole, potting soil, and some sweet pea seeds for the kids to plant. She had them pick an egg shell and add a little soil. Then bury a couple seeds and mist it with the spray bottle to water the seeds. Because egg shells are biodegradable and good for the soil, once the seeds sport, you just crack the bottom of the egg shells for the roots to get through and plant the whole thing.

I admit, I was doubtful that these little seeds planted by a bunch of kindergartners and their siblings would make it. But low and behold- 10 days after planting- they look like this,

The mom who did it said she had them plant 2 seeds each. But you can see in the egg on the right that there is a 3rd little plant popping through! The boys are LOVING watching their plants grow each day. Now I have to figure out where to plant them so the sweet peas can keep growing and bloom. Know anything about sweet peas? I pretty much have a black thumb, so Im not really sure how this will go... Ill keep you updated ;)
